Jeff Lab women physicists try to plug the 'leaky pipeline' of women in physics

American Cynthia "Thia" Keppel and Italian Patrizia Rossi are research physicists who've been probing the nucleus of the atom for years. But there's one nagging mystery that even these brainy women can't crack: Why the U.S., Great Britain and other Western nations lag so far behind Italy and some Latin American countries in their percentage of female physicists. It's a gender phenomenon they and others have noticed for decades, with no hard consensus as to why. "When I was at the university, ...

USS Enterprise returns to dry dock in Newport News

The USS Enterprise took one more step on its final journey Saturday when it was moved into dry dock at Newport News Shipbuilding. The Enterprise was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It was retired from active service in late 2012. Its defueling and inactivation is the first job of its kind and marks the end of a momentous chapter in U.S. Navy history. Six tugboats guided the famed ship from Pier 2 into Dry Dock 11 so workers could continue the defueling process. The 1-mile t...

Coffee certification will stimulate economy

Coffee futures are stimulating commercial warehousing growth at the Port of Virginia, according to locally based trade experts. In September 2016, the port will join New York, Miami, New Orleans and Houston as a designated domestic delivery point for internationally traded Arabica coffee beans. Port officials announced the certification last summer. Several roasting companies in Hampton Roads turn the coffee, which arrives in harbors raw, green and unprocessed, into the familiar, fragrant blac...

Students at Old Dominion University, for example, now can do a four- to eight-year stint as apprentices at a nearby shipyard while simultaneously earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. The apprentices spend a day or two per week in the classroom and the rest ...
